Born and raised in Miami, Florida; Jencarlos Canela, of Cuban decent and born on April 21st, 1988 is a singer, songwriter and actor. A true example of dedication, talent and professionalism; his rise to prominence reads like blueprints to global stardom. At the young age of 27, Canela has successfully starred in multiple televised productions, collaborated with some of the most prestigious musical talents of his time and performed in over 200 concerts in countries that include the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Guyana, Guadeloupe, Nueva Caledonia, Rumania, Spain, and Martinique located in the French Islands, among others.
At age 12, Canela began his musical career as the lead singer of the band “Boom Boom Pop”, he later decided to pursue his career as a solo artist. A graduate of The New World School of the Arts, he debuted as a theater actor and singer in the 2008 critically acclaimed stage musical “Miami Libre” at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The play narrated the dreams of a young Cuban who arrived in Miami with the intention of becoming a singer which was performed in both English and Spanish. Canela’s debut album titled “Buscame,” released in 2009, entered the Latin album charts at #1 and was certified Gold within weeks of its release. In 2010, he was nominated as Best New Artist at the Latin Music Billboard Awards.
After the success of Canela’s theatrical debut, he his first television acting role in Telemundo’s soap-opera “Pecados Ajenos”. This production led to his participation in various Spanish soap-operas such as “Doña Barbara” and “Mas Sabe El Diablo” where he became the star of the network’s most highly rated primetime drama. The success of his role in “Mas Sabe el Diablo” in 2009; landing him an exclusive contract with Telemundo. Later he starred as the male lead in productions “Mi Corazon Insiste” and “Pasion Prohibida”. In 2009 and 2010, Canela also starred in movies “Hunted by Night” and “Mas Sabe El Diablo: El Primer Golpe” which although was released after the original broadcast of the novela, the production was based on the prelude of “Mas Sabe El Diablo”. Rise to Fame; Awards & Recognitions Known for musical hits such as “I Love It”, “Amor Quedate” (Love, Stay With Me), “Mi Corazón Insiste” (My Heart Insists) and “Dime” (Tell Me), Canela has collaborated with the likes of Grammy award-winning songwriter Emilio Estefan, Latin Grammy award-winning producer Rudy Perez, and performing artist Pitbull, among several others. For the past five consecutive years, Canela has been chosen by Spanish publication “People En Español” as one of their 50 Most Beautiful People. In 2009, he graced their prestigious cover as one of the headliners of their 25 Most Beautiful Men edition. In 2010, Canela entered his alma maters, Miami Dade College, Hall of Fame. By 2011, he made Latin Television history when he was awarded “Breakout Artist of the Year” at Premio Lo Nuestro by Univision network while simultaneously being a artist exclusively signed by its competing network, Telemundo- NBCUniversal. Other awards and recognitions include but are not limited to the Cassandra Award for “New Artist of the Year” in 2011, “Favorite Lead Male Actor” in 2012 and 2013 at Premios Tu Mundo and “Song of the Summer” for “I Love It” at Premios Juventud 2013. His second album, “Un Nuevo Dia” (“A New Day”), debuted at #1 on the charts after being released for just one week. In 2013, Jencarlos was signed as an exclusive artist by Universal Music Records and released his third and most recent discography production, “JEN” in May of 2014 Canela’s 2014 kicked off with the esteemed honor of receiving the key to his hometown, the City of Miami, from the City’s Mayor Tomás Regalado. Also in attendance at this ceremony were Florida Governor Rick Scott, General Manager of Univision Radio in Miami Claudia Puig, and Univision’s President of Programmin and Content, Alberto Ciurana, among others. A much worthy recipient of this honor Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado was quoted describing Canela as “truly the face of Miami”. As one of the most successful young artists who hail from the Sunshine City, Forbes Magazine’s recognized him in their “30 under 30: Hollywood” feature. Most recently Canela once again broke the mold by becoming the First Latino in history to push the button which activated the 60 second 11,000 pound Waterford Crystal Ball drop for 2015 in New York City’s Time Square; his second consecutive year performing in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
Always demonstrating that his image goes hand in hand with great causes, this young star accepted to be the voice of the Department of Families in Puerto Rico for adopting children. He has participated several movements such as a walk in Puerto Rico against child abuse, bringing together thousands of people for the same cause. Helping others and especially children, is a priority for Canela, hence his decision to become a spokesperson and image for Children’s Miracle Hospital Network, whose sole mission is to increase funds and awareness for local children’s hospitals. An avid supporter of the FANLYC in Panama, Canela also works for the cause of the Foundation Villa Blessing in Dominican Republic. Adding to his extensive charitable work, Canela has dedicated his efforts for over 9 years with the League against Cancer and has been a spokesperson for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation dedicated to finding the cure and treatment of paralysis. Canela also became the only Hispanic-American figure to represent the IRC (International Rescue Committee) internationally and his distinctive voice formed an important part in the song “Somos el Mundo”, the Spanish version of the legendary song “We Are the World” by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, which was recorded by the producer Emilio Estefan with the plan of raising funds for the earthquake victims in Haiti. An activist for many causes, Canela most recent involved was with the “Live like Bella” foundation committed to raise awareness against pediatric cancer and hoping to make a difference during the first “Bella’s Ball”, a gala that brought awareness to the foundation, its main mission and also celebrated the life of a little girl named Bella who lost the fight against cancer, took place on September 13th, 2014 in Miami FL.
Univision Network extended an invitation for Canela to join their esteem panel of judges for the eighth season of the prominent reality TV show “Nuestra Belleza Latina” and on March 2nd, 2014 the network announced his participation as the third judge on the show who would serve as a guide and mentor to the contestants. Soon after the success of his participation on “Nuestra Belleza Latina”, Univision joined forces with Televisa Network in Mexico City to create an epic reality show called “Va Por Ti”. The show in which Canela contributed as a “Captain” of Team Jen, consisted of mentoring and training a group of young talented singers who’s hopes, dreams and aspirations were of winning the singing competition that would pave way to their musical careers. Canela’s team made an impressive impact on the series’s viewers, earning his team a place in the finals. It was most recently announced that Canela was signed with NBC Television Network for the male lead role with actress Eva Longoria in her new NBC comedy “Telenovela”. “Telenovela” is a half-hour single-camera comedy series hailing from Cougar Town co-executive producers Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein and Universal Television, where Longoria’s Unbelievable Entertainment is under an overall deal. Longoria, Pietrosh, Goldstein and Ben Spector will executive produce. Canela is set to give life to Xavier, a Latin heartthrob and telenovela superstar.
